This is my mindmap. My logo was going to be a tooth with claws slashing across. I wanted to use the word KILLAH as a tag name and have it red with blood spraying or dripping from it. I wanted dominance and attack to be the relationship established between the T-rex and its prey. The colours were to be earthy and neutral because I wanted the details to be focused on the visual and the tag name and logo to pop out. So I used green and tan colours to emphasize and highlight the red that was more prominent and emphasized danger, threat, or killing.
This is my sketch of my skate deck. The T-rex is attacking its prey and eating it while the prey is helpless and lying in a pool of blood. The T-rex is much more bigger and detailed to show it is the predator. I used a scene from the movie, Jurassic Park to reference and used it as a template to draw in the shadows and highlights. I was going to use the knife tool to create sections to make it a gradient of reds so that the background looks like blood dripping.
This is my final version of the skate deck. I used shades of shades and tints of black, white, tan, green, red, and grey. I drew in the shapes and then changed the opacity level to make the shading or highlighting blend in with the main colours. The background is changed because this effect makes it more of a killer personnae where the background texture is slash marks across the board. Also the T-rex is in the highlight and looks like a killer indeed with its menacing red eyes staring at you. The gradient was used to create a spotlight on the T-rex and to emphasize the background texture, which after trying several colours, black was the best choice.
This is the tracing of the dinosaurs. Some of the shading is shown where it was used. The marks on the forehead to the marks along the body of the T-rex. It took an hour to do the T-rex alone to do the shading and colouring it in. The prey took lesser time because it was smaller and there was not as much detail and it was mostly doing shadows and highlights. I got that part done faster since I had spent so much time doing the T-rex. The most challenging part for me on the T-rex was drawing the shape of its head and shading its tail. There were so many highlights and shading on the tail that it took time to make sure to get the light source right. I changed the opacity level on each part of the shades and tints to make it blend. Even the claws were tricky at first because they were small in size and to make sure the tracing was appropriate. I had to play with the opacity levels to make sure the shading looked proper and to show what was in the foreground and background.
The prey was mostly using the same colour for the shades and tints but changing the opacity level to make sure what was in the foreground. I traced the outline of the body, head, leads, arms, and tail of the prey and then shade it in. I chose tan because it balanced the green and was not too much of a contrast and did not dominated the T-rex. I even put shading around the eye of the T-rex to make the eye look menacing and to make the red more pronounced.
The blood puddle was the easiest part because the shape was more organic and not so geometric. The red was merely used to show that the blood pouring out from the body of the prey. The deeper red is to show the shading of the blood under the body of the T-rex. The claw was merely tracing and choosing the shades of grey. The opacity of each part of the claw took some time to find the right balance and to not make it look brown or be completely black. The KILLAH tag name is made with a deep maroon colour to make it look blood stained after a while and the texture is made from sprayed strokes to make it look like blood spraying and it to be messy.
This is my template of my skate deck. It shows the type font and its effects. It shows the final design of my board that included the model of the tooth in the logo. I just dragged it in. I created a colour palette of all of the colours that I used in my board and I showed off the texture and gradient of the background.
